Description
An easy and delicious recipe for Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteaks, featuring savory ground beef, caramelized onions and peppers, and melted provolone cheese on toasted hoagie rolls. Perfect for a quick and satisfying weeknight meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional, for color and sweetness)
- 1 pound lean ground beef (80/20 or 85/15 works beautifully)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 4 hoagie rolls or sub rolls, split lengthwise
- 8 slices provolone cheese (or American cheese, if preferred)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for rolls)
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced yellow onion and bell peppers. Sauté for 7-10 minutes until softened and starting to caramelize. Remove from the pan and set aside.
- Add the ground beef to the same skillet. Break it apart and cook until fully browned. Drain any excess grease.
- Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, black pepper, and salt. Mix well.
- Add the Worcestershire sauce and stir to combine.
- Return the sautéed onions and peppers to the skillet with the ground beef. Stir everything together, allowing flavors to meld for 2-3 minutes over medium heat.
- Lightly butter the inside of each hoagie roll. Toast the rolls briefly in a dry skillet, under the broiler, or in a toaster oven until golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Divide the ground beef and veggie mixture into four equal portions in the skillet. Lay two slices of provolone cheese over each portion.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the cheese melt until gloriously gooey and bubbly (1-2 minutes).
- Carefully scoop each cheesy beef portion into a toasted hoagie roll. Serve immediately.
Notes
- For an extra kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the beef mixture.
- Experiment with different cheeses like Monterey Jack or Swiss for a twist.
- Mushrooms are a popular addition to cheesesteaks; slice and sauté them with the onions and peppers.
- Always toast your rolls for the best texture!
