Description
A simple recipe for crusty Italian bread with a golden crust and soft interior.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 packet active dry yeast
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix warm water and sugar. Add yeast and let it foam for 5 minutes.
- In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
- Pour yeast mixture into flour mixture. Stir until combined.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
- Place on a baking sheet and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Make slashes on the top of the loaf and bake for 25-30 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and let cool before slicing.
Notes
- For a crispier crust, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
- Store bread in a paper bag to keep the crust crusty.
- You can add herbs for extra flavor.
