Description

A simple recipe for crusty Italian bread with a golden crust and soft interior.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix warm water and sugar. Add yeast and let it foam for 5 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
  3. Pour yeast mixture into flour mixture. Stir until combined.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes.
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  7. Place on a baking sheet and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  9. Make slashes on the top of the loaf and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool before slicing.

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
  • Store bread in a paper bag to keep the crust crusty.
  • You can add herbs for extra flavor.
