Ingredients
Scale
- 1 block (14-16 oz) extra-firm or super-firm tofu
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2–3 tablespoons neutral oil (like canola, vegetable, or grapeseed)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari)
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water (for slurry)
- Toasted sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
- Sliced green onions (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Press the Tofu: Drain tofu, wrap in paper towels or a clean cloth, and press with a heavy object for at least 30 minutes to an hour to remove excess water.
- Cut the Tofu: Unwrap the pressed tofu and cut it into uniform 1-inch cubes.
- Season and Coat Tofu: In a medium bowl, gently toss the tofu cubes with 2 tablespoons cornstarch, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper until evenly coated.
- Prepare Honey Garlic Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using). Set aside.
- Make Cornstarch Slurry: In a separate tiny bowl, combine 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water and stir until smooth.
- Fry the Tofu: Heat 2-3 tablespoons neutral oil in a large non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add tofu in a single layer (cook in batches if necessary) and fry for 5-7 minutes, flipping occasionally, until all sides are golden brown and crispy.
- Add the Sauce: Reduce heat to medium-low. Pour the prepared honey garlic sauce over the crispy tofu in the skillet and stir gently to coat.
- Thicken the Sauce: Immediately add the cornstarch slurry to the pan, stirring constantly. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the sauce has thickened into a glossy glaze that clings to the tofu.
- Serve: Remove from heat and serve hot, garnished with toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions, if desired.
Notes
- For the crispiest tofu, pressing out as much water as possible is absolutely key. Don’t skip or rush this step!
- If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the amount of garlic or ginger.
- For a vegan version, substitute maple syrup or agave nectar for honey.
- This dish is best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Reheat gently in a skillet or oven for best results.
- Don’t overcrowd the pan when frying the tofu; this ensures even browning and crispiness.
